Traumatic Brain Injuries

According to a 2007 study published in the Journal of Neurotrauma, traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States that disproportionately affects younger people, therefore impacting individuals in the prime of their life.

TBIs range in severity.  Some TBIs may be mild making them undetectable using traditional diagnostic tools like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

However, the medical community has made stunning progress in developing an advanced MRI known as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) that is able to detect water molecule disruptions in the white matter of the brain that are strongly associated with traumatic brain injury.  Notably, DTI imaging has been the critical tool used by researchers to diagnose and treat former and current NFL players for traumatic brain injury.
